During December, students from nine organizations, clubs, and classes across the Latta School District participated in a Christmas tree decorating contest to raise money for charities of their choice. Nine undecorated trees were generously provided by the Latta Schools Educational Foundation.
The participating groups and their chosen charities were: LHS Student Council/Interact Club, supporting the Latta Rotary Club’s Happy Feet Program; Academic Enrichment classes, supporting Project Jesus Ministry, Inc.; Latta Middle School Student Council, supporting PruittHealth in Dillon; Latta High School FFA, supporting the Dillon County Animal Shelter; Latta High School and Latta Middle School Girl Talk, supporting Habitat for Humanity; Latta High School Academic Challenge, supporting The Winkeler Foundation; Latta Middle School Academic Challenge, supporting Helping Hands Food Bank; Latta Elementary School, supporting Care House of the Pee Dee; and Latta High School Robotics, supporting the Dillon County Blood Program.
Students, faculty, and community members voted for their favorite decorated tree by placing donations in boxes in front of each tree during December events at the EPAC. Congratulations to the Latta High School Robotics Club for collecting the most donations! Ultimately, everyone was a winner, as all proceeds were donated to the selected charities. This decorating contest proved to be a meaningful service-learning experience for Latta students.
