Latta High School harvested lettuce for fresh home-grown salads in the Latta Viking Cafe. The lettuce was planted and harvested just down the hallway in the Ag classroom. Mr. Aaron Miles, high school agriculture teacher, wrote a grant for a hydroponic garden, and this is the 1st year growing lettuce in the school. He states, " The students gain hands-on experience from seedling plugs to the harvest, including checking the water ingredients daily in the classroom." Hydroponic gardens are indoor and run on circulating water, no soil, with special ingredients and LED lights. "It's so nice to have fresh produce for student and staff salads," said Jenna Deaver, Child Nutrition Director. Mrs. Deaver states, "With just one harvest, the cafeterias can fix around 50 salads. Some students cannot get fresh food at home, and amazingly, we can offer food from seed to plate at Latta Schools."
