After winning the Pee Dee Regional Competition in February, the LMS Academic Challenge team earned the opportunity to compete at the State Competition in Camden, SC on Friday, March 20, 2026. They delivered an impressive performance in the semifinal round, defeating Edgewood Middle School 31–23 to advance to the final state championship match. Although the final round brought some challenges, our team showed resilience, determination, and true Viking pride, representing Latta Middle School with excellence from start to finish, naming them the state runner-up. To celebrate their hard work, the team enjoyed a well-deserved lunch at Blaney’s Wings and Grill following the competition compliments of Mr. McInnis.

The LMS Academic Challenge Team left campus bright and early this morning to travel to Camden, SC for the State Competition. They were surprised with goody bags, packed with chips, candy, water, and inspirational quotes from our very own Student Council . We wish the LMS Academic Challenge Team and their coach Jordan Williams the very best, and we hope they bring home a state championship title today! Go Vikings!

The LMS ProTeam class has been studying the "I Can Be Different" module in the course's curriculum. Yesterday, students experienced "Disability Simulation Stations" where they were able to get firsthand experience of what it's like to live with disabilities including visual, hearing, and speech impairments, as well as physical limitations and sensory disabilities. Stations included wearing altered sunglasses, speaking and listening with cups over their ears, reciting a nursery rhyme with a mouth full of jelly beans, picking up paper clips with thimbles on their fingers, and writing with their non-dominant hand and/or with their feet.
This lesson is designed to create ability awareness and promote tolerance and empathy for those who live with disabilities. To close out the lesson, students will complete research on different disabilities, create a one-page infographic, and present their findings to the class.

Today, Ms. Upton’s students kicked off their Character Scout Reports, diving into our new novel to uncover important details about the story’s characters. Acting like literary detectives, students explored the text to identify the main character’s key traits and supported their ideas with strong textual evidence. They also made thoughtful inferences about what these clues might reveal about the characters and how they may develop as the story unfolds. It was an exciting start to our journey into the novel! 📚✨
