From classic literature to modern audio drama! Ms. Upton’s ELA classes just finished reading The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving. Today, they shifted gears by listening to The Hollow podcast, which brings the infamous legend into the current times. Students practiced active listening by coloring the story's setting while gathering critical details about the characters. 🎃

We had so much fun this past Tuesday celebrating our Vikings who met behavior expectations during the first nine weeks! More than 250 students qualified for our PBIS Kona Ice and Extra Break reward! Students enjoyed extra time outside on a beautiful day and a refreshing Kona Ice as a special treat for their hard work and positive choices.
We are so proud of these students for meeting expectations and making positive choices throughout the first nine weeks! We look forward to celebrating even more Vikings during our second nine weeks incentive. Keep making great choices, Vikings!

The Latta Middle School and Latta High School Student Council delegates traveled to Aynor High School today to attend the South Carolina Association of Student Councils (SCASC) District 2 Rally. During this rally, students received the opportunity to hear a guest speaker encourage them about not allowing labels to define who they are, and then they participated in workshops and swap shops to exchange ideas about becoming a leader who transforms our community. Our delegates are so excited to bring new ideas back to our school and to get to work on improving our school and the surrounding area. Today was filled with a lot of work and even more fun!

Our students have been having fun creating PowerPoint presentations! Some chose to personalize their slides with photos of themselves, while others got creative using the draw feature. As they shared their presentations with one another, it was wonderful to learn new facts about each student and see their personalities shine through. What a fun and engaging way to build technology skills while getting to know one another better!

During a novel study on the book On My Honor, students in Mrs. Roberts' 6th grade ELA classes got creative and titled all twelve chapters in the book. Students had to use their creative and critical thinking skills to create a title for each chapter. There definitely were some unique and well thought out titles.

Students in Mr. McInnis' 7th grade English-Language Arts class play Gimkit once or twice a week to review skills they've learned. Gimkit is an online competitive game with various entertaining modes. Teachers can create their own questions or draw from a massive pool that covers all subject areas. The performance reports allow teachers to see what type of questions students are struggling with the most. Rounds of Gimkit can help prepare students for assessments and the fun it brings helps students feel more relaxed before they test.

The ZEARN END ZONE Challenge is live in Mrs. Allison’s math classes! 🏈 As students complete Zearn lessons, their progress is celebrated along the way. Each touchdown earns a non-monetary classroom incentive, providing students with extra motivation to stay engaged and keep learning. When students complete an entire mission, they receive a certificate of completion to celebrate their accomplishment. We love seeing our Vikings motivated, engaged, and taking ownership of their math learning!

Mrs. Marsh’s 7th grade Science students got hands-on with chemistry as they created ball-and-stick models of different compounds! Using gumdrops to represent elements and toothpicks as chemical bonds, students built models of compounds such as water and methane. We love seeing our Vikings turn abstract science concepts into something they can see, build, and understand!

The Latta Middle School library has kicked off the month of October right! Mrs. Britt has featured displays in the library for students to enjoy. She has displayed many fall/Halloween books for students to select during their library time this week. She has also created a "Book Boneyard," displaying damaged books that have had their final checkout (RIP). In addition to these arrangements, Mrs. Britt also exhibited books written in Spanish as well as middle school classics for Classic Literature Week (October 5-11, 2026). The LMS library is full of a variety of books that meet the needs (and wants) of every reader!

Miss. Rogers’ art students began their drawing unit by learning about the different grades of drawing pencils, shading techniques, and how artists can use value to make a flat image appear three-dimensional.
They then applied those skills to create letters that look like shiny Mylar balloons!
For their project, our 8th-grade students worked together to create the words “Latta Vikings!” using their individually shaded balloon letters. 💚💛

Ms. Herring’s 6th grade math students explored the relationship between diameter and circumference using a fun, hands-on activity with circular foods! Students discovered that when circumference is divided by diameter, the result is always approximately π (pi). What a fun way to make math concepts come to life!

After studying Ancient Egypt, one of Mrs. Roberts' 6th Grade SS classes designed their own sarcophagus. Students worked hard creating their masterpiece. They even became skilled in writing their name in hieroglyphics. Way to go!

The 6th grade social studies classes have been studying Ancient Egypt. One of Mrs. Roberts' classes decided to create a scroll. The students went through the process of making their own paper, or in Egyptian terms papyrus. After allowing the paper to dry overnight, the students were ready to become scribes and create their scroll. The students put their artistic skills to the test by drawing a pharaoh and writing their names in hieroglyphics.
