🍭🧬Sweet Science in Ms. Branch's Biology Class! 🧬🍭

Learning about DNA has never been so sweet! Students in Ms. Branch's Biology class recently put their creativity and scientific knowledge to work by constructing edible models of DNA using candy!

Through this hands-on activity, students explored the double-helix structure of DNA and how nitrogenous bases pair together to form the building blocks of life. Using colorful marshmallows, licorice, and toothpicks, students brought an important biological concept to life in a fun and engaging way!

But the learning doesn't stop here! Next week, students will build upon this activity by using the models they created to further explore the important biological processes of DNA replication, transcription, and translation. This will allow students to connect their hands-on creations to a deeper understanding of how genetic information is copied and used within living organisms.

Our Vikings Are Making Their Way to 100%!

Several LHS classes reached an exciting milestone today in our Viking Journey to 100% Perfect Attendance challenge!

Congratulations to the homeroom classes of Ms. Bryson, Ms. Davis, Ms. Hyatt, Ms. Branch, Mr. Hudson, Ms. Oxendine, Ms. Gomillion, Ms. Jackson, and Dr. Brown for reaching their first attendance goal and earning Tier 1 of their Viking Journey! Students in these classes celebrated their accomplishment with a bag of chips as a special treat!

Throughout the nine-week challenge, classes are working together to achieve perfect attendance, earn pieces of their Viking voyage, and unlock exciting rewards along the way.

We are proud of these students for showing up, being on time, and working together toward their attendance goals! We can't wait to see which classes reach their next milestone!

Physics Students Put Newton's Laws into Action!

Learning was in motion recently at Latta High School as Mrs. Glover's physics students put their creativity, problem-solving skills, and scientific knowledge to the test!

As part of a hands-on lesson exploring Newton's Laws of Motion, students designed and constructed their very own race cars. After putting their cars together, students took their creations into the hallway for a race, bringing some friendly competition and excitement to their learning!

This engaging activity gave students the opportunity to take scientific concepts they have been studying in class and see them in action. Along the way, students were able to put their critical-thinking, problem-solving, and engineering skills to work while exploring how forces affect the motion of objects.

This is just one example of the innovative, hands-on instruction happening in classrooms throughout LHS! By bringing learning to life through creative activities, our teachers are helping students make meaningful connections between classroom lessons and real-world applications.

Great job to our physics students for putting their knowledge into motion! Way to go, Vikings!

Calling all creative Vikings! Latta High School's 2nd Annual Book Character Pumpkin Decorating Contest is here! Students are invited to bring their favorite literary characters to life by decorating a real pumpkin for a chance to win up to $50! 🏆

Pumpkins may be submitted to the LHS Library from October 13–27, with winners announced on October 29.

Students should see their English teacher or Mr. Williams in the library for contest rules and additional information. You do not need to be currently enrolled in an English class to participate. We can't wait to see your creativity on display! 🎨📖

Finding Inspiration in Nature! ✍️

Innovative instruction has been happening all week at LHS! On Wednesday, Dr. D’s English II students took their learning outside and into the Courtyard as they explored the art of haiku! Surrounded by nature, students observed the sights, sounds, and details around them and used their surroundings as inspiration to write their own nature-themed haikus.

Respect the Rival 💚💛🏈

Rivalry Week is officially underway at LHS! To kick off the week, students participated in “Respect the Rival Day” by writing kind and encouraging messages about our biggest rival, the Lake View Wild Gators. While the Vikings and Gators may be fierce competitors on the field, today was a reminder that good sportsmanship and respect come first.

FCA Students Gather for "See You at the Pole"

This morning, students gathered at the flagpole in front of Latta High School for FCA’s annual “See You at the Pole” event. The student-led gathering included encouraging words, songs, and prayer for members of the school and local community. Many LHS students participated in the event, joining together before the start of the school day.
